Buffets Regain Appeal as Diners Look to Save

Buffet-style restaurants are drawing renewed interest as inflation continues to pressure household food budgets, motivating diners to seek out fixed-price formats that promise more predictable spending.
Datassential’s Social Listening platform shows social media mentions of “buffets” and “all you can eat” jumped 30% in 2025 from the prior year. That broadly coincides with sustained price pressures across grocery aisles and restaurant menus.
As diners scrutinize costs more closely, the appeal of paying a single price for unlimited food is gaining traction.

Datassential’s Operators data further reinforces the momentum. Across cuisines, all-you-can-eat (AYCE) formats frequently outperform their broader category counterparts on “popularity” — a composite metric that blends ratings, review volume, and review frequency to gauge consumer appeal. Brazilian AYCE concepts rank highest overall, with a popularity score of 60%, but the momentum across Asian buffet formats also is pronounced.
Korean AYCE restaurants have a 56% popularity score, 29 percentage points higher than Korean restaurants overall. Japanese and sushi AYCE, as well as broader Asian, Chinese, Mongolian, and Vietnamese AYCE formats, also register higher popularity scores than their respective cuisine segments. While these concepts deliver interactive, globally-inspired dining experiences, their predictable pricing structures also help diners control spending.
That popularity aligns with broader category growth. Datassential’s Menu Trends data shows that Korean BBQ has grown 33% over the past four years, with the firm’s AI-powered Menucast projecting an additional 13% growth over the next four.
Often defined by tabletop grills where guests cook marinated, thinly-sliced meats such as galbi, the Korean BBQ format combines customization with social dining.

Meanwhile, Datassential’s Prep Methods report spotlights global communal formats such as Chinese hot pot as an early-stage experiential preparation method — one in which the cooking process and the communal dining experience are inseparable. The format also indexes higher among Gen Z and Millennials.
The firm’s 2025 Datassential 500 report spotlights KPOT Korean BBQ & Hot Pot as one of the fastest-growing chains, expanding 76% over the past year. Datassential notes that KPOT’s rapid rise reflects the strength of combining two globally-inspired, interactive formats under one roof.
Inflation likely remains a central driver behind the broader buffet resurgence.
“With everyday meal costs elevated nationwide, unlimited formats like buffets clearly signal value for budget-conscious guests looking to maximize variety and portion for the prices they’re paying away from home,” Datassential Trendologist Huy Do said. “That can make these concepts more attractive as diners look to stretch their dining dollars without giving up the experience of eating out.”
Datassential’s The State of Value report reinforces that appeal, citing Golden Corral’s buffet model — including its unlimited wings offering — as resonating strongly in midscale dining. Indeed, the company has reported a 15% bump in same-store sales over the past 16 months.
